What a blue slip covers

  • An identity check: VIN, engine number and compliance plate
  • A safety check to the NSW standards
  • A design check, if it needs one, at an extra cost
  • Any compliance certificate checked against the vehicle
  • Your report the same day, to take to Service NSW
  • Valid for 42 days

What is a blue slip?

It’s the inspection report NSW asks for before it will register an unregistered vehicle. The full name is an Authorised Unregistered Vehicle Inspection, or AUVIS, report.

It shows the vehicle is safe and meets NSW’s identity and design standards. You bring the vehicle to our workshop and we do the inspection here. You need one if:

  • The rego expired more than three months ago
  • It came from another state, territory or overseas
  • It has no number plates
  • It’s a write-off approved for re-registration
  • It has had a big change, such as a new engine

Who can do a blue slip?

Only a station Transport for NSW has accredited for unregistered vehicle inspections can issue one. The AIS sign out the front lists what a station is authorised to do.

We hold that accreditation: Licensed TfNSW Authorised Unregistered Vehicle Inspection Station (AUVIS). We’re also a licensed motor vehicle repairer, NSW Lic No. MVRL62214, so if something fails, we can fix it here.

The checks we do for you

NSW wants up to three checks before it will register a vehicle. We do every one it needs in the same inspection.

  • Identity check

We read the VIN or chassis number, the engine number and the compliance plate off the vehicle itself, and check they match the records. No compliance plate? We check its entry on the Register of Approved Vehicles.

  • Safety check

Brakes, steering and suspension, wheels and tyres, lights, seatbelts, the windscreen and the body, against the NSW standards, with a brake test whenever it’s safe to do one.

  • Design check

For a used import, a trailer, or a vehicle with an aftermarket body or other modifications. We check it meets the design standards, and that any modifications match its compliance certificate. It costs extra, depending on the vehicle.

  • Modifications? We’ll tell you what they need

We inspect vehicles with modifications that meet NSW’s standard rules, but not heavily modified vehicles. Some modifications need a compliance certificate from a licensed certifier before the vehicle can pass. We’ll tell you if yours does. Bring the certificate and we record its number on your report. Not sure? Call us on 1300 693 017 before you book.

  • Your report the same day

We finish the report the day we inspect, and it goes to Transport for NSW. Keep the original for Service NSW.

Before you come in

We’re at 196 Parramatta Road, Auburn. Weekdays 8am to 4pm.
  • How long it takes

Allow up to an hour. We book one vehicle an hour, so we’re ready for you when you arrive.

  • What to bring

    • Your driver licence
    • Proof you own the vehicle, such as a receipt or bill of sale
    • Old rego papers or interstate papers, if you have them
    • The compliance certificate for any modifications, if it has one
  • How soon you can come in

Pick a day and a time window: morning (9am to 12pm), afternoon (12pm to 4pm) or both. Today and tomorrow show first when they’re free, and you can book up to 12 weeks ahead. Your confirmation gives the time you’re booked in for.

  • Can I drive it here unregistered?

Yes, by the most direct route, while you’re getting it registered, as long as it’s safe to drive. Keep your booking confirmation with you. It shows the vehicle is booked in for its inspection. If the vehicle can’t be driven in safely, we can tow it to our workshop. Call us for a price.

    What the rules say

What happens if it fails

The report sets out why it failed, and we’ll show you what needs fixing. The price is the same whether it passes or fails.

You then have 14 days to get it repaired and back to us, and NSW’s rules make that second inspection free. After 14 days it’s a new inspection at the full price.

We can quote the repairs and do them here, or you can use any licensed repairer. Either way, it comes back to us for the second inspection.

A vehicle the technician finds dangerous fails as “failed dangerous”, and it can’t be driven or ridden until it’s repaired.

How it works

Book online in a couple of minutes. After that, it’s four steps.
  1. A bunch of keys with a car key and remote fob on a plain white surface.

    Book online

Pick a day and a time window. That confirms your booking straight away.

  2. A silver hatchback with its headlights on, on a two-lane country road.

    Keep your confirmation

We text and email it to you with the time you’re booked in for. It shows the vehicle is booked in for its inspection, so keep it with you on the way in.

  3. Our workshop floor: cars raised on two-post hoists, a technician at a transmission jack and a tool trolley in front.

    Bring it to Auburn

Come to 196 Parramatta Road at the time on your confirmation. Allow up to an hour.

  4. A technician checking the engine bay of a grey Mercedes, with a coolant jug on the floor beside it.

    Get your result and pay

A pass gives you your pink slip or blue slip report. If something needs fixing, we show you what. Either way, you pay by cash or card once it’s done.

Questions about blue slips

Can’t see yours? Ask us a question, or call or text.

42 days from the inspection. The report usually goes to Transport for NSW electronically, but Service NSW asks you to bring the original when you register at a service centre, so keep it safe.

Arrange CTP insurance, then take the original report to a Service NSW centre to register the vehicle. If the rego expired more than three months ago, Service NSW says the number plates need replacing too.

Blue slips for unregistered vehicles

If the rego is current, or ran out less than three months ago, you’re renewing, so it’s a pink slip. Past three months, or for a vehicle from another state or overseas, it’s a blue slip.

Blue slip or pink slip?

Yes, even if its interstate rego is still current. It needs a blue slip before it can be registered in NSW.

Registering an interstate car

The same rules apply, because NSW treats a motorcycle as a light vehicle. Choose Motorcycle when you book and you’ll pay $51. Additional costs may apply depending on the specifications or modifications of your vehicle.

Do motorbikes need a blue slip?

Yes, if there’s room. You pick a day, then morning (9am to 12pm), afternoon (12pm to 4pm) or both. The booking form shows today and tomorrow first, if they’re free. When you book, we put you in at the first free hour in the times you picked, and your confirmation gives the time. Allow up to an hour.

No. Booking online confirms it straight away, and we text and email your confirmation. Keep it with you on the way in.

Book your blue slip

Pick a day and a time window, and your booking is confirmed. Then drive it to our Auburn workshop and pay there.
