Yes. In NSW you can drive an unregistered vehicle to an authorised inspection station as part of getting it registered, as long as you take the most direct or convenient route and the vehicle is safe to drive. Police can ask you to prove that’s what the trip is for, which is where your booking confirmation comes in.
What NSW allows
The rule is on the NSW Government’s page about unregistered vehicles. You’re allowed to drive an unregistered vehicle when you’re getting it registered, and you have to take the most direct or convenient route to where you’re going. The places it lists include the nearest convenient authorised inspection station, a service centre, and an insurer’s office to get CTP.
So driving a car with lapsed rego from home to its blue slip is fine. Stopping at the shops on the way isn’t.
What police can ask
The same page says that if you’re pulled over while driving unregistered, you may need to show police proof that the trip is to get the vehicle registered. It also recommends making an appointment for the inspection that can be verified with the vehicle examiner.
That’s what a booking confirmation is for. When you book with us online, the booking is confirmed straight away, and we text and email you a confirmation with your name, the vehicle and its rego if it has one, the time and our address. Keep the text on your phone for the drive in.
The confirmation isn’t a permit, and nobody can promise how a particular stop will go. It shows the trip is the one the rule allows.
When you need a permit instead
For any trip that isn’t part of registering the vehicle, you need an Unregistered Vehicle Permit from Service NSW. A permit covers a set journey, and the number plates have to come off the vehicle before it’s driven under one. If the vehicle has been given a direction not to be driven until it’s repaired, the registration allowance doesn’t apply either.
Make sure it’s safe to drive
The allowance is about registration, not roadworthiness. If the brakes, tyres or lights aren’t right, fix them before the drive. If it isn’t safe to drive, we can tow it to our workshop instead. Ask us for a price.
Book, then drive in
You can book a blue slip online and have your confirmation in a couple of minutes, then pay at the workshop. We’re at 196 Parramatta Road, Auburn, open weekdays from 8am to 4pm. Allow up to an hour.
If you’re not sure the vehicle needs a blue slip at all, when you need a blue slip goes through the six situations.
Quick answers
Do I need an unregistered vehicle permit to drive to a blue slip?
Not if the trip is part of getting the vehicle registered and you drive the most direct or convenient route to the inspection station. You need a permit for other trips.
What do I show police if I’m stopped?
Proof the trip is to get the vehicle registered. The NSW Government recommends booking an inspection that can be checked with the examiner. Your booking confirmation by text or email shows the booking.
Can you tow my car to the inspection?
Yes. If the vehicle isn’t safe to drive, Blue Slip Today can tow it to the workshop. Ask us for a price.
