What is a pink slip?
Once a vehicle is more than five years old, NSW usually wants a safety check each year before you can renew the rego. That check is the pink slip, also called an eSafety check or a rego inspection. Your renewal notice says whether you need one.
Book a time, bring the car to our workshop and wait while a technician checks the safety items in the NSW standards, from the tyres and brakes to the lights, seatbelts and windscreen. It takes 30 to 45 minutes.
When it passes, we send the result to Transport for NSW straight away, and you can renew through Service NSW. It’s valid for six months.
We inspect cars, SUVs, utes, vans, motorcycles, caravans and trailers, including ones with modifications that meet NSW’s standard rules, but not heavily modified vehicles. The rego needs to be current, or to have run out less than three months ago. After that, it needs a blue slip.

Who can do a pink slip?
NSW only lets stations approved under its Authorised Inspection Scheme (AIS) do pink slips, and only examiners accredited by Transport for NSW can carry out the inspection.
Every examiner has to hold a tradesperson’s certificate in motor vehicle repair.
Our technicians are authorised by Transport for NSW to do pink slips here at the workshop. We’re a licensed motor vehicle repairer too, NSW Lic No. MVRL62214, so if something fails, we can fix it here.
How we inspect

The VIN read off the car
The technician reads the VIN, the car’s identification number, off the car itself and checks it against Transport for NSW’s records. Your rego papers can stay at home.
A brake test, whenever it’s safe
Every first inspection has one whenever it’s safe to do, and a car can’t pass without passing it.
To the NSW standards
The Light Vehicle Safety Check Standards, plus the maker’s own wear limits and specifications.
Lodged straight away
When the car passes, we lodge the result with Transport for NSW straight away, and the report is finished the same day.
Needed or advised, marked clearly
If we quote repairs, each item is marked as needed to pass or only advised. Advice never changes the result, and you can have the work done anywhere.
Our technicians, licensed
One of our own technicians does every inspection. We’re a licensed motor vehicle repairer, NSW Lic No. MVRL62214.

What happens if it fails
Most fails are parts that wear out without you noticing, like tyres, globes, wiper blades and brake pads.
The report sets out why it failed, and we’ll show you what needs fixing. The price is the same whether it passes or fails.
You then have 14 days to get it repaired and back to us, and NSW’s rules make that second inspection free. After 14 days it’s a new inspection at the full price.
We can quote the repairs and do them here, or you can use any licensed repairer. Either way, it comes back to us for the second inspection.
A vehicle the technician finds dangerous fails as “failed dangerous”, and it can’t be driven or ridden until it’s repaired.

Yes. A pink slip, an eSafety check, a safety inspection report and a rego inspection are all the same check, the one you need before renewing your rego. A vehicle that’s been unregistered for more than three months, or is coming from interstate, needs a blue slip instead.

Six months from the inspection. Renew your rego within that time, or you’ll need a new one.
If it ran out less than three months ago, yes, and you renew as usual. After three months there’s nothing left to renew, so the vehicle needs a blue slip.
